President’s Day

Jan Millard, President of Suffolk Bowls (Bowls England) held her President’s Day on Thursday 30th June at Risbygate Club, where she is a member. Ladies who joined her for the day included past presidents and life members from all over the county, together with several members of the Risbygate bowling fraternity and their Captain, Audrey Hodson. Also watching the games was a very keen supporter, Frances Getty, who is 98 years of age.

On hand to welcome the ladies was Jan’s husband Bernie, dressed in the Modern Grant tartan as worn by the Glenmoriston Pipe and Drum Band, of which Bernie is the Drum Major. The volunteer band, based in Bury St Edmunds, was formed in 1979 and has performed in Switzerland and the Netherlands. Its members also compete in national band competitions and play at functions throughout East Anglia.

After a short welcome speech by Jan, and a group photograph on the green, it was down to the business of bowling for the jack. From the laughter on the green and during the roast turkey dinner that followed it was evident that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, the top three winners being presented with prizes for their (successful) efforts.

Suffolk County ladies recently had a very impressive win against Hertford, at Bishop’s Stortford, which puts them into the group final of the John’s Trophy. Their next round will be against Essex at Felixstowe and if they win there they will be in the last four. The semi-final and final will be held at Leamington. We wish them well in the next round.
