The Ladies
This is a very friendly and active club with over 200 members, the aim being to make new members welcome and membership enjoyable. The season begins with an Open Day early in May, when all members are welcome to take part in an afternoon’s play and enjoy a supper afterwards. This is an ideal occasion for new and established members to get to know each other and perhaps think about offering occasional help with the various social events organised during the season.
There are two greens - a total of 12 rinks - and scoreboards, mats and jacks are available for use by club members. The greens are open for general play Monday to Friday from 13:00hrs and at weekends from 10:00hrs, subject to the weather!
As well as having their own internal Woodland League, ladies play in friendship and roll-up games, usually on Wednesday afternoons. Friendly matches are also arranged with other clubs, either ladies only or mixed. Details are posted on the Club’s notice board and members are encouraged to sign up when they feel confident enough to enter. Games are played to English Bowling Association rules.
On Monday afternoons the ladies’ section arranges a mixed drive for all members. There is a small charge, the money being shared among players with the highest scores. There is a break for afternoon tea and biscuits. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are reserved for friendship games; Friday evenings are set aside for team games, with each player contributing 50p towards a prize pot for the winning team.
Federation games take place in the evenings against other clubs. Participants must be registered Federation players and may only play for one club. Several competitions are arranged by the committee during the summer, all played under EBA rules, and details will be found on the clubhouse notice board. Partners and teams are drawn at random by the committee.
For general play ladies wear a grey regulation skirt (or trousers), a white top, brown tights or stockings, and brown bowling shoes. However, there may be variations in dress code for some matches and club competition finals. The season concludes in September with an afternoon match in which all ladies may participate, followed by the AGM and a meal.
Club member Polly Rackham was County President for the 2007 season and in fact many of our ladies apply and are selected to play in the friendly Suffolk County games. As well as local competitions, such as the Joey Taylor-Balls League, we compete nationally for the Mason and Yetton trophies, also the mixed Egham trophy. In the past we have had several successes.
